The captive breeding of game species (species for sport hunting), has had a significant growth in Portugal, mostly those specialized in birds (pheasant, partridge, quail, mallard, etc.) and the production of wild rabbits. There are some cases of production in captivity of big game species such as wild boar and deer.

European Community supports cover these initiatives too. Properly designed, they result in very interesting incomes for the producer, as unit sales prices are highly rewarding. It is however a type of production controlled and supervised by the Nature and Forestry Conservation Institute, i.e. the production of game species depends on judgment of this entity.
